The Scene: The bright, clean, white-walled dining area is a reassuring canvas for doling out raw fish to loyal patrons. The restaurant’s continued popularity is evidenced by the efficient turn of its coveted tables and the crowd huddled outside the unassuming Victorian house, rain or shine. Service is efficient and friendly, doing its best to please the masses of families, professionals and hipsters that gather. The Food Mio is best known for its superb sushi, but it delivers on non-sushi Japanese fare as well. Start with the shrimp shumai–perfectly crisp, with a cloud-like center–or the vigorously tart cucumber salad, sprinkled with asparagus and doused in vinegar dressing. The chicken yakisoba can be spiced up by request and is good match for the crunchy and sweet tempura roll. Original creations like the Oregon roll–a mixture of tender crab, avocado, asparagus and salmon–have become local favorites.
